Description
The idea to choose making a jigsaw puzzle to introduce Struve’s arc was born out of the knowledge that so little is known about this important scientific achievement. Too few know that Struve arc is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of ten countries. The ambitious 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle format was chosen as a playful way to literally put the arc together from pieces to picture. The package contains a booklet on the Arc.
Struve’s arc or the triangulation arc was built to measure the exact size and shape of the Earth. The arc, 2821.853 km long, stretches from Hammerfest in the Arctic Ocean to Staro Nekrassovka on the Black Sea.
The first precise measurement of such a long stretch of meridian was carried out between 1816 and 1855 by the astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve, director of the Tartu Observatory.
The work was triggered by economic, military, and scientific interests and need for accurate maps. It marks an important step in geosciences and topography, brought about cooperation of researchers as well as monarchs from different countries, in the name of science.
Research directed from the Tartu Observatory brings together Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldova.
The Struve Geodetic Arc was inscribed in 2005 on the UNESCO World Heritage list as an outstanding technological ensemble and extraordinary example of international scientific collaboration
